Photos taken around Swindons Railway Works, built in 1843 to build and service GWR steam engines running between Bristol and London.
Expanding over the turn of the century to build ship engines, the works also produced a dozen large howitzers during 1914 for the first world war.
During the 2nd world war it produced gun mountings and tank turret rings, until in 1947 it was producing 60 new steam engines a year.
